SHE SHALL NOT BE MOVED

So, our house was literally sinking. . .

Don’t be fooled by that carefree smile on my face. The reason for our life preservers? The place we called home was literally sinking into a bog.

It took one late-night phone call from a structural engineer to wake me to the reality that I could not protect those left to my care. With children safely tucked in bed, the gas line threatened to come undone alongside my sanity.

I needed a God that didn’t fit in the glovebox of my mini van to be pulled out only when the yellow light was turning red.

I required a God that was powerful enough to command the armies of Heaven, yet intimate enough to cover my trembling hands with His own as I rocked my babies in the darkness.

In that moment empty of human solution, I called on Jesus - the Name above all names that desperate mothers have cried to throughout the ages - and He came.

Since then, the irony of a Mother’s Day gift bouquet is not lost on me. I now know that any mother would much rather be given an indestructible weapon of war to be used in her family’s defense.

The haunted look in the eyes of today’s young mommas seem to agree and reflect back to me the terror I once felt - that somehow, I would fail at my most sacred task.

To these sweet girls, I ask you to consider the ranks of the faithful who have walked before you. You can call on Jesus, too.

Under His command, they did the impossible:

- Piecing and basting a family from scraps of a torn life.

- Weaving in and out of a wake, laying gracious hands of comfort on mourning shoulders as her own heart lay fresh in a grave.

- Posting guard by a hospital bed, draining sheer will from her own veins to pour life into her son’s.

- Gathering her young in shaking arms, chin lifted in faith to leave the church, a widow.

Warriors and victors all, their faith speaks to and encircles us today.

For like all mothers, past and present, we must choose to surrender the outcome of this battle to the true Savior of our families, even while standing with our backs to the wall and our swords drawn and ready to fight in His strength.

Take courage, Mom. He is with you.

“God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved; God will help her when morning dawns.” Psalm 46:5
